Based on the ground-breaking research of Kristin Neff and the clinical expertise of Christopher Germer, MSC teaches core principles and practices that enable you to respond to difficult moments in your life with kindness, care and understanding. The MSC workshop consists of an orientation, 8-weekly, 2.75 to 3-hour sessions, plus a 4-hour retreat for a total of 29 hours of guided instruction. No previous meditation experience is necessary, but it can be helpful. The program combines meditation practice, reflections, body practices, and group inquiry to provide a multifaceted and complete program for developing self-compassion and mindfulness in everyday life. Self-compassion can be learned by anyone, including those who have not been modelled compassion in their childhood or who feel uncomfortable when they are good to themselves. It’s a way of being that stands up to harm, including the harm we unwittingly inflict on ourselves through self-criticism, self-judgment, self-isolation, or self-absorption. Self-compassion provides emotional strength and resilience, allowing us to befriend our shortcomings, motivate ourselves with kindness, forgive ourselves when needed, relate wholeheartedly to others, and be more authentically ourselves. Rapidly expanding research shows that self-compassion is strongly linked with emotional resilience, well-being, less anxiety, depression and stress, maintenance of healthy habits such as diet and exercise, and more satisfying personal relationships. These topics will be weaved into a workshop combining conceptual teaching, experiential practices and exercises, inquiry, and dialogue to deepen understanding, practice application, and integrate self-compassion into daily life. During the course, participants are encouraged to work up to a daily practice of formal or informal meditations of 30 minutes daily.
